That is her registered name and we have never called her anything else. A cream cabin cruiser with a navy stripe and a blue bimini, ΝΖ 384 out of Zakynthos. Both figures are straight off her papers: 7.79 metres overall, up to 7 guests on board. Small enough to slip into coves the big boats pass by, big enough to spend a whole day on. The wheel sits under the bimini, so whoever is driving is in shade and so is everyone sitting behind him. Padded bench seating wraps around the cockpit and the cool box lives here too. Three steps down from the cockpit there is a V-berth with cushions, a galley sink with a wooden worktop, and the bathroom behind the door. Τρία σκαλιά κάτω από το κόκπιτ υπάρχει κουκέτα V με στρώματα, νεροχύτης με ξύλινο πάγκο και η τουαλέτα πίσω από την πόρτα.

It is not a suite and we will not pretend otherwise. It is a real place to change, to put a bag out of the sun, or to lie down for twenty minutes when the sun has been generous — and it means nobody has to plan the day around finding a toilet. Sunbeds run across the bow, forward of the windscreen, with the rail around them. Underway it is breezy and loud in a good way; at anchor it is the quietest part of the boat. The Suzuki 300 hangs off the transom and the ladder drops into the water beside it. Every deep-water swim stop starts here — down the ladder, straight into whatever blue we have found. The ladder goes deep enough that getting back on board is not an event, which matters more than it sounds when there are children or grandparents aboard. The engine is always off before anyone is in the water. Almost every other boat working this coast is bigger than ours, and bigger means anchoring well offshore and swimming the rest of the way with your bag over your head. You step off the bow into ankle-deep water and the cove is yours, because there is no path down to it from the road — nobody arrives on foot. Which coves we can reach depends entirely on the wind and the swell that day. Some are calm all summer, some open for an hour. We pick on the morning, not in advance.
